James Brown Dinner
by Alice Catherine Teeple
(ketchup, pickles, french fries, bun, lettuce)
Artist's Statement:
The Godfather of Soul, as interpreted in burger and
fries. The pickle grimace (HIMME NOW!) reflects James
Brown's more-recent trials and tribulations, whilst
the lettuce pompadour celebrates (BRIDGE!) the early
dandyism of the Brown loved in the (HA! HA!) early
1960s. Although a touching salute to the long, funky
career of James Brown, the acute realism depicted here
tends to subtract from the abstraction desired in a
"tribute." One almost wishes this portrait were not
so photorealistic, for the untrained eye can only see
the portrait of the man, instead of the emotional
diaspora radiated by the essence of James Brown.
